Probably one of the most memorable movies in Hindi cinema, Mughal e Azam is about the love between a prince and his maid. Dilip Kumar and Maduhbala became immortal with this classic big budget movie. Dialogues, the forbidden love scenes and the zulm and sitam of Akbar the great is what Mughal e Azam is all about. The spelling beauty of Madhubala and her dard bhari "Mohabbat ki jhoti kahani pe roye" still echoes in the streets of whole Indian sub-continent.

Mughal e Azam is by far the most expensive movie ever made in India. Released in 1960, it cost the producers the enormous amount of 3 000 000 Dollars. Yes that is 3 million Dollars!
As a comparison it should be mentioned that an average movie cost 200 000 Dollars in the 1960's.

Some interesting stuff about the movie

-On the construction of the set of the Mughal Darbar, 150 carpenters, decorators and painters worked for more than 10 months. One or two cameras are considered enough in the shooting of films in general. Some scenes in Mughal e Azam were shot with the help of 14 cameras.
Mughal e Azam has been selected for seven international film festivals in Europe and USA.
